WebJuneteenth, also known as Freedom Day, is a holiday that commemorates the end of slavery. It is celebrated on June 19th each year. On this date in 1865, enslaved people in Texas were informed by the Union Army that the Civil War was over and they were now free. This was more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation had been issued.
